The first design of the statue, was Christ carrying a cross with a globe in one of his hands. However, the idea of Christ with open arms was better approved by the residents of Rio de Janeiro who believed it symbolized a welcoming to tourists. The outer layer of the statue is covered by soapstone, which can withstand the storms caused by rapid climate change in the region. In fact, in February of 2008, during a violent storm, the statue was struck by lightning but was left unscratched because of layer of soapstone that acts as an insulator.
The statue was constructed in a period of nine years, from 1922 to early 1931, but was only opened later that year on October 12 celebrating the day of Our Lady of Aparecida. It now, stands over 2000 feet on the peak of the Corcovado Mountain, weighing almost 700 tons, standing 100 feet tall. This marvelous monument, has made millions and millions of tourists go to Rio over all these years, not only because of its Christianity symbol, or great human achievement, but because of its privileged views of the worldwide known beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. The panoramic views with the blessing of Christ has made many photographers, whether professional or amateur, choose this as their travel destination.
